Try This On Your Bagel: Savory Edition

Last blog post, I shared some of my favorite bagel toppings that are perfect for any sweet tooth. Now, I'm back to please those of you who enjoy the ~savory~ things in life. From traditional toppings to more experimental combinations, here are 5 bagels perfect for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

1. ToMayTo ToMahTo

First up we have a classic everything bagel topped with whipped chive cream cheese, roma tomato, and salt & pepper. In regards to the animated series Veggietales, I used to only like Larry the Cucumber and hate Bob the Tomato. As time has progressed, I have started to appreciate Bob more. That's just my way of saying that I have grown fond tomatoes over the past few months. In the picture shown, I used a roma tomato which is much smaller than a regular one, the perfect size to go on top of a bagel. Sprinkle it with a good amount of salt & pepper, and you have yourself a delicious meal.

2. Garlic Lover

Next, is a sesame bagel with plain cream cheese, roasted garlic, olive oil, and pepper. This combo is a play on the classic garlic bread that we all know and love. Mince the garlic and put it on the stove until it's golden brown then add it on top of your cream cheese. Then, drizzle some olive oil to tie in all of the flavors. The roasted garlic flavor blends effortlessly with the tanginess of the cream cheese, and the pepper just gives it that extra razzle dazzle.

3. Pepperoni Pizza

When your bagel hits your eye like a big pizza pie... that's amore. This plain bagel topped with tomato sauce, shredded mozzarella, and pepperoni makes the perfect personal pizza for an afternoon snack. If you have a toaster oven with a broiling function, use it. It will help evenly melt the mozzarella to ensure some nice, stringy cheese pulls when you take your first bites.

4. Everything & More

Up next is an everything bagel sandwich with plain cream cheese, honey, honeycrisp apple slices, prosciutto, and arugula. [Hold for applause.] This bagel tiptoes on the line between sweet and savory, but it's so good that no matter what side you are on, your satisfaction is guaranteed. The salty prosciutto mixes with the sweet honey and thin apple slices in a way that transports you to an Italian cafe with every bite. When gathering the ingredients for this bagel combo, don't walk, run.

5. Bagel Quiche

You read that right. Bagel. Quiche. First you have to scoop out the insides of a plain bagel with a spoon. Then, you pour in 2 eggs and milk whipped together, chopped pastrami, spinach, and cheddar cheese. Heat your oven to 375 degrees and pop this in for 15-20 minutes. You'll end up with this elevated, tasty bagel. It requires more prep time than the other ones I mentioned above, but it's worth it!

From this blog post, I urge you to continue thinking of your bagels as blank canvases that you can unleash your creativity upon. Not only do these different toppings/techniques add another depth of flavor to your bagels, but they are fun opportunities to take what you have in your refrigerator or pantry and make something new.
